Note before you read that I have a large frame, so I gravitate towards larger backpacks. That being said, this bag was a great upgrade. I have a Citizen messenger bag that I love, but it gets old to carry full of stuff, and it can get uncomfortable if you fill it with lumpy stuff, as it is basically a soft bag with no structure. Don't get me wrong. It's great, but sometimes an actual backpack is the solution. This brings me to the volcan. First thing you notice is that it is very rigid. The heavy tarp lining on the outside gives way to some sort of intermediate layer, then a soft layer on the inside. Because of this, it basically always stays in its cereal box shape, great for packing things tetris-style, once you "poof" it to the proper shape after it's flattened for shipping. You can load it with quite a bit of stuff before it turns int a big round bread loaf.Pros:Semi rigid, great every day bag that you can load up with jackets, groceries, whatever, without it changing shape. It also stands up on its own, so you can set it down upright.Super weatherproof. I left in the back of a truck going down a muddy road. The whole outside of the bag got covered but everything inside was totally clean, dry, safe.Lots of padding, not just for your back and shoulders but for all the stuff you carry. My DSLR and laptop live in there and have seen quite a few nasty drops. Nothing ever gets damaged.Sensible organizing. Lots of pockets that are sized for things youd actually carry, like a laptop (15 inch, so it'll fit something that isn't a macbook too), pens, headphones, but not so many pockets it becomes a black hole for your trinkets.Deep water bottle pockets. They actually fit a hydroflask bottle and once everything settles, it holds everything in well enough that you can set the bag down without it ejecting your bottle. This is a personal preference, but I do also like that it isn't too strappy. Don't get me wrong, a hiking bag is great but when you're running around the store, office, airport, wherever, all those straps become flails that hit everyone, or catch on everything. The only thing this bag has is a chest strap, which is just about perfect for an everyday bag.The cons:This bag is big. Not just in capacity, but footprint. I have a large frame, so it fits me well but if you're on the slender side you're going to look like a little kid on their first day of kindergarten. The Hondo may be a better, albeit less versatile fit. It's heavy too. It has so many layers of protection that the bag has a noticeable weight to it. Again, when you're built like a refrigerator, you wont notice. But still. The straps could be a little longer. When I put this on wearing a big coat or my motorcycle jacket, I tend to run out of strap to let out before I put the backpack on and tighten it up again. The rigidity may not be for you if you carry big poofy things like sweaters. The bag doesn't expand really, so you'll find yourself struggling to overfill it like a soft bag. I carry less stuff than the bag can hold so I have the room, but that's just me.The openings and flaps can be a pain, because it's so rigid. The backpack wants to be closed all the time, so whenever you want to get to anything in the bag, it wants to just close itself on you.The inside is black. I like backpacks that have a bright inner liner so you can see all the stuff you have in there. Even in daylight, it feels like you're staring into the void when you look into this thing. Not a lot of mounting provisions on the front. If you're the type of person that likes to mount things to your bag rather than inside them, stay away. This bag is a monolithic box with a single loop for your tiny U lock.Overall, this is probably the last bag I am going to buy, now that I have it, a messenger bag and a hiking pack. I really think this is the ideal commuting/every day bag.**UPDATE**: after a little over a year, the TPU coating is coming off in places where the bag is folded/moved frequently. Everything below remains true, but for the price of this bag I expected the TPU coating to last longer. I do use it often (daily bag and travel with often), but still - $150.00 should get me more from a backpack.Been looking for the ideal backpack/personal item for travel for a while now. This - I am pretty confident - is it. Pics show what it can hold without feeling stuffed:- large toiletry bag (includes an electric beard trimmer in it)- electronics bag- 13" laptop- 4 T-shirts- 1 pair of jeans- 1 pair of joggers- 3 pairs of socks- 3 pairs of shorts- 3 pairs of boxer briefs- 1 pair of flip flops- 1 18oz yeti water bottle- 1 24oz mason jarWas able to pack this and ONLY this for a 4 day trip. Should fit under any airline seat (may not if over stuffed...I don't see anyone ever being asked to gate check this though).SUPER durable! Haven't had a chance to test water resistance, but it definitely seems like it'll live up to the hype.Pockets, storage, zippers etc. are thoughtful and hit that sweet spot of 'just enough'...I personally don't like bags with too many zippers, pockets, etc. (more hardware that can fail, less storage SPACE ultimately - why duffel bags are the most volume efficient baggage).Solid straps (durable and comfortable).I got the black bag, and would have no problem taking it into a meeting if necessary - I wouldn't say it's the most professional bag, but it's definitely not unprofessional/high-schoolish.**UPDATE**Have had this for almost a year now, and my satisfaction with it has increased.Since my initial review, this thing has been put through the ringer! It's been to 4 different countries, on countless hikes, on over 20 flights (in overhead bins and under seats - fits beautifully under seats), into board rooms, and quickly became my daily bag for commuting on foot in and out of work. I am NOT gentle with my bags, and this thing is still in great shape! It has a couple of minuscule marks from paint that it's picked up as a result of me scraping it along walls, but it's easily cleaned with a damp paper towel/rag. All of the hardware is still in great shape.I've FULLY loaded this thing during a transatlantic flight, followed by time on public transit; the wide padded straps, sternum strap, and padded vented back panel make this thing impressively comfortable to walk around with all day (even when fully loaded). I've also used this as my ONLY bag for about a dozen long weekend trips (packed similarly to the specs outlined above/in the pics), which might be its ultimate/most impressive utilization (find me another 31L BACKPACK that easily fits under a regional jet's seat...I dare you to waste your time). This isn't a cheap bag, but it is definitely worth what you pay for it. IF the day ever comes when anything critical on this bag fails/compromises its functionality, I'll be seriously sad. Have entertained buying a second one as a spare, to replace this one in case it ever does fail (I don't know if I could go back to other backpacks after having this one). If you own ONE backpack, that you use for all things backpack related, this is a great option.
